Freud, a little controversially, referred to women as the “dark continent”. He said he didn’t understand women and said so more than once. He also suggested that, as a result of the Oedipus complex, mothers and daughters never completely separated.

Luce Irigaray, the French feminist and psychoanalyst, has plenty of criticisms of Freud (she is still working at the age of 88) but, following Freud, referred to the relationship between mothers and daughters as the “dark continent of dark continents”. So what is it about this relationship that seems so mysterious?

In this workshop we will explore this “dark continent”, using theory certainly, but more using your experience, as a woman who is also a daughter and perhaps a mother with a daughter and a therapist who may be dealing with these issues and the resulting countertransference.

What about the men who attend? We will suggest that the role of fathers is a key element to understanding the problem and increasingly absent fathers in family life today makes matters worse.

Join us for a day using creative exercises, theoretical discussions and a process group.

This workshop will help you with any issues you have and perhaps illuminate ongoing work with clients, especially those who are both a mother with a daughter and a daughter still struggling with her relationship with her mother.
